Description

These organic, fair-trade beans are shade-grown in the highlands of the Sierra Madre mountains – more specifically in the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve, one of the world’s most diverse forest reserves. This reserve contains Meso-America’s largest continuous cloud forest, and it serves as a refuge to thousands of plant and animal species. El Triunfo is a rare and valuable sanctuary that requires continued protection. Biological corridors are created in order to facilitate bird and animal migration.

Within this buffer zone is the Comon Yaj Noptic co-op, which was founded in 1995 by a group of smallholder farmers from indigenous groups in the area. (Comon Yaj Noptic means “all of us think.”) Today there are about 160 producer members. The producers here have the advantage of many ideal conditions, including good altitude, a very lush environment, and high-quality coffee varieties. This area is very close to the border of Guatemala near Huehuetenango, Guatemala’s most famous coffee-producing region. Our Mexico Chiapas is grown at roughly 1750 masl between January and April.
