Description

Hacienda la Amistad is located in Coto Brus, a canton in the province of Puntarenas, Costa Rica. The land is owned and operated by Roberto Montero, a third generation coffee farmer whose grandfather was part of a team surveying the border between Costa Rica and the new country of Panama in the early 1900’s. Roberto’s grandfather purchased over 10,000 hectares and began to cultivate coffee. The family has returned 6,000 hectares of land to Costa Rica for the preservation of La Amistad International Park, the largest natural reserve in Central America. Only 300 hectares of land are utilized for organic coffee cultivation while the remainder of the 4,000 hectare estate is preserved forest. Roberto provides housing, supplies, and free access to medical care for all seasonal pickers, who are largely indigenous workers and their families traveling from Panama. He also employs over 100 full-time workers from neighboring Las Mellizas, for coffee cultivation and dried fruit processing.

This coffee is grown at 1220 masl, and entirely comprised of Catui and Caturra varietals. Once harvested in January, it is fully washed and machine dried.
