Description
Burundi’s coffee is characterized by small-hold farmers with plots under 1 hectare, who use meticulous practices like mulching and pruning. The whole cherries are sold to a central washing station for processing and drying. This coffee is grown on Ryamukona, one of three hills surrounding the Izuba Washing Station. Izuba, meaning “sun” in Kirundi, is situated close to Kibira National Park. Izuba benefits from the region’s favorable soil and climate as they create ideal conditions for high-quality coffee production. Once the cherries are brought to Izuba, they undergo a thorough floating process, followed by extensive wet sorting. Their natural coffees require about 30 days of drying time.
This Burundi is grown at 1500 masl, harvested in March, and dried on raised beds.
